‘Case is Sub Judice’: NCSC Closes Inquiry Into IIT Student Suicide

The SIT had filed a chargesheet in the case last month in which they have charged Khatri for abetment to suicide and under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) that had suo motu conducted an inquiry into the Mumbai Police investigation of the suicide case of IIT Bombay student Darshan Solanki in February, earlier this week wrote to Mumbai Police informing them that the inquiry had been closed.

Parents of Solanki, who belonged to the Scheduled Caste, had alleged that their son had died due to caste discrimination at the premier institute. The Mumbai Police SIT however arrested his batchmate Arman Khatri for allegedly threatening Solanki and said that caste discrimination was not the reason behind Solanki’s suicide.

An officer from Mumbai Police said, “Two senior officers from SIT had gone to Delhi earlier this month when a hearing on the matter was held at NCSC office. Solanki’s parents were also present. The SIT sought information about the probe conducted by SIT and doubts raised by the parents. Earlier this week, the commission wrote to us saying they were closing the inquiry, as the matter was sub-judice.”

The SIT had filed a chargesheet in the case last month in which they have charged Khatri for abetment to suicide and under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The SIT included a suicide note they found in Solanki’s room in which he had blamed Khatri for his suicide. Police also mentioned that his poor academic performance was also a reason behind the suicide.
