UP Man Arrested in Jaunpur for Bomb Threats Sent to Mumbai Police Control Room

According to the police, on Thursday, Mumbai police control room received five WhatsApp messages from a phone number stating that bombs would be set off in Andheri-Kurla area on June 24 evening and also in Pune.

Mumbai police have arrested a 23-year-old man from Jaunpur, UP, for allegedly sending WhatsApp messages to Mumbai police’s helpline number and threatening to set off bombs across Mumbai and Pune. The accused had also demanded Rs 2 lakh to stop the blasts. A probe revealed that he was in a dire financial condition, and made the threats to make some quick money from the police.

The arrested accused has been identified as Darvesh Rajbhar alias Rahul.

According to the police, on Thursday, Mumbai police control room received five WhatsApp messages from a phone number stating that bombs would be set off in Andheri-Kurla area on June 24 evening and also in Pune.

“The sender also demanded Rs 2 lakh saying he could stop this from happening as he was the one who was to carry out the attack. Explaining the reason for demanding such a small amount of money, the message sender claimed that he was given Rs 2 crore for setting off the bombs, and he was given Rs 2 lakh then he and his team would leave for Malaysia,” said a police officer.

Suspecting the call to be a hoax, Amboli police station on Thursday filed an FIR against the holder of the phone number and started looking for him. API Sandeep Patil, ASI Sunil Khaire and head constable Raghunath Barge from Oshiwara police station, after technical investigation, zeroed in on the suspect’s location and arrested Rajbhar from Jaunpur on Friday.

A probe revealed that Rajbhar was in dire need of money. He had seen news about hoax calls on Twitter and came up with this idea of making money. Rajbhar had worked as a labourer in Mumbai, the police stated.

He has been arrested under sections 505(1)(B), 505(2) and 185 of the Indian Penal Code and was produced in the court, which remanded him to four days police custody, another officer said.
